The scaffolded teacher - Thinking tools and scaffolding for success

I have always focussed on creating an independent learning environment for my students and thinking tools and learning contracts have always been the way I achieve depth of learning and student engagement. Having recently completed a Post Graduate in TESSOL,  I developed an interest in strategies that scaffold students to acquire language successfully and I merged all these areas together to when I set up an "Unlimited Learning Space" at Henderson Valley. 

A classroom where we removed some of the limits to learning. Students were encouraged to develop a more independent approach to gaining knowledge and creating solutions, as they managed their time and resources through a learning contract. Tasks and activities were planned to promote critical thinking and a deeper level of understanding. 

Five classes benefited from being in the space and now the teachers, having received this valuable 1 to 1 in-class professional development, are using similar approaches within their own classrooms to get students to think deeply, critically and reflect on their learning. 

The networked Teacher - E-learning and IT integration

I have over 10 years experience as a classroom teacher and developed a strong classroom pedagogy that promotes IT driven, student centred learning. I am keen to share this pedagogy through mentoring teachers so that technology is not just another thing to do, but embedded in the literary and topic planning.

Recently I have worked at Henderson Valley School developing a school wide blog community with an aim of increasing acheivement in writing. This project included working with teachers and students in classrooms as well as professional development outside the classroom. I managed the initial IT set up required using Google Apps for Education which can require a lot of hours and technical troubleshooting, something classroom teachers just dont have the time for. I also worked with students and teachers across the board, supporting the use of Ipad apps to motivate and scaffold learners during literacy.

Once a project of this magnitude gains momentum, it needs additional support to be maintained and I believe it is most important to transfer skills and knowledge to teachers within the school, so eventually it can be run without that support.

The interactive Teacher - Learning Management Systems and Website Design

Is your website reflective of what is happening in your school in real time?
Does your website allow students, teachers and the school community to interact with eachother?

Many schools now use learning management systems to allow this real time interaction to occur. I have had experience using Ultranet as a tool and designing and managing the public access areas of the online learning environment at Arahoe School. Here I created the design, content and photos.

At Henderson Valley School, I also designed and launched their current website using a design tool powered by Wix. With a background in marketing, I can ensure the content is relevant and your website accurately reflects your brand and becomes a useful tool for teachers, parents and students alike.
